Join Us to Honor the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge
Join us in commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a defining moment in history and a testament to the courage and resilience of American soldiers during World War II. From December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States in the war unfolded as German forces launched a desperate counteroffensive through the Ardennes Forest. Against overwhelming odds, freezing conditions, and staggering losses, American troops stood firm. Their bravery turned the tide, paving the way for the Allies’ final victory in Europe. Let's come together to honor the legacy of their sacrifice and valor in this historic campaign.
Special Activities on December 16th, 2024:
Reading of the Names: Starting at 6 a.m. on December 16th, join us at the World War II Memorial’s recently restored Circle of Remembrance and the FDR D-Day Prayer Plaque. We will solemnly read aloud the names of those laid to rest at the Ardennes, Henri-Chapelle, Luxembourg, and Netherlands American Cemeteries who died during the Battle of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 – January 25, 1945). The reading will pause at 10:30 a.m. and resume at 12:00 p.m., continuing until approximately 2 p.m. We welcome volunteers to join us in this meaningful tribute. Register below to participate in the Reading of the Names.
Commemoration Ceremony: At 11 a.m. on December 16th, gather with us for a Battle of the Bulge 80th Anniversary Commemoration in the main plaza of the World War II Memorial, facing the Rainbow Pool. As part of the ceremony, WWII veterans and representatives from each of the Allied Nations that took part in the Battle of the Bulge will lay wreaths at the Memorial’s Freedom Wall of Stars in honor of the more than 1 million Allied service members who took part in the campaign and to remember the over 22,000 Allies and civilians who were killed.
